HISTORY OF EDL HAUS
The Palace of the Hungarian Discount Bank is one of the most beautiful civic buildings in our capital. The project to transform the unremarkable house of the Auer family into an Art Nouveau palace was commissioned by the owner of the financial institution and royal advisor Theodor Edl, although he did not live to see its completion. After his sudden death, the Hungarian Discount Bank decided to carry out this bold plan. As a result, the Main Square gained its second landmark and its present appearance.
The young 21-year-old queen, following the defeat of her forces and the tragic death of her husband in the Battle of Mohács, retreats from Buda to Bratislava to escape the advancing Turks. She temporarily resides in the house of the Auer family while preparations for the royal court are being made.
In 1856, Theodor Edl established his own financial institution under his name on the Main Square.
The building of the Art Nouveau palace for the Hungarian Discount and Exchange Bank is being completed.
The Neumann family, residents of the house, are deported to Ravensbrück and Auschwitz.
The band Modus meets and rehearses in the building.
The restaurant on the Main Square was visited by Spanish King Juan Carlos I.
Mikuláš Dzurinda holds talks here with Angela Merkel about Slovakia's accession to the Eurozone.
The fire destroys both the interior and the facade of the building.
